oh geeze
... so I did a good job at not forgetting about this place! Eh. I guess that everything I could post here now will be shown in class later today anyways. But the project is done! Hooray! Etc! I really need to keep a sticky note or something on my computer, reminding me about things like this.

New project time go!
Krissy and I are working together on this one; we'll be making a castle level! I'm working on designing and building the castle itself, while Krissy is making the stuff that goes inside it. Tables, beds, desks, etc.
So far the idea is that the castle is deserted, but fairly recently deserted? Something like that. It has destroyed walls that are half way through being re-built. As if it had been attacked, and while being re-built was taken over, or the ruler in the castle fled; something along those lines. We've divvied out who's making what and such so far, and done some research on different countries castle styles and what have you. All kinds of fun things like that. (Also Lego castles, though they were less useful.)
I'll scan in this one messy page of notes and sketches that I have when I'm not in class!

Postmortem time go!
What went right?
At an artist’s standpoint I’d like to say that I’m really happy with the way that all of the textures ended up. They do have the right feeling that I was going for when I first planned out the idea. And though they many not be extremely accurate in terms of looking like real rust, they still give a rusty feel, still really grungy; while still looking warm. Exactly what I wanted, awesome. Though they were few, I was also pretty happy with the models themselves.
What went wrong?
First of all, I never got anything into Torque, which was really disappointing. Second, the hallways inside the sewer were way too narrow. And with the scene being put together in Max and not Torque, it’s really easy to lose the camera inside a wall or something. The scene itself was also pretty boring, had I brought it into Torque and gotten to play with fog and had more time to set it up, I think I could have done much better.
What would I do differently?
Honestly I think the only things I would change in this project would be the things that had gone wrong, as stated above. Just getting everything exported and moving things around would've made this project much better.

More textures!
Thursday, January 29, 2009
Because I'm awesome I keep forgetting to post! So uh, here I go. Updates are kind of slow and I'm lame, so I haven't scanned in my sketches yet. But I do have some colored textures to show off so it's okay!

This is the texture for the horizontal pipes, you know, despite it being all vertical right now. But hey, it works. Still working on getting it to be more grungy and rusty looking. Hoping it stops being so freaking cold outside so I can take some photos of .. rusty things. Dirt's pretty hard to come by when my whole yard is covered in three feet of snow, but rust I can probably do. Eee, tangent. Back on topic, this is a pipe. :D

This texture is pretty obviously still in progress, mostly because I keep going back to that pipe. Pretty much the same situation as the other one, needs more grunge, etc etc. I've got a few more things modeled out, like the bridge things, and some more gears. I still need to get the actual sewers built and the connectors between the pipes. And more textures. Oh boy. But! It's moving along, this is good. Maybe I won't forget to post more this weekend. c: (Auuugh internet smilies why can't I escape you.)

Questions!
So I decided to stick with the art thing, I'm an artsy kind of person so that's cool. Here's the answers to those questions from class.
1. The environment I plan on creating is an underground sewer type of place, which is dark and very warm-color orientated. Lots of oranges, reds, and purples; a very rusted look. Pipes and gears will twist along some of the walls, also covered in rust. Little blue/cyan lights will dot the walls to give a very dim light that contrasts enough with the warm colors.
2. I picture this being in some kind of science fiction/fantasy, an adventure game where players need to search the sewers for some great beats perhaps.
3. The floors and walls of the sewers to start, I may do these in constructor for the simplicity of adding to a game. Then I will need to make grates, pipes, and many different kinds of gears. Also a ladder. And various other things that will be strewn about the area that I’m not entirely sure about. Crates, anyone?
4. The kind of mood I’m going for is something dark and mysterious, but not necessarily scary? Not entirely sure on what it’s following quite yet.
Tonight I plan on getting some sketches scanned in and getting some more concept things drawn and possibly colored! Excitement, etc. I'll post those up later once I'm done.

Introductions!
Oh man, late post is way late, but at least it's here.
I'm not really sure about what I should be posting here in my first post but whatever. My name is Shelby if it wasn't obvious and this is my blog for updating things on my project. I'm still having a hard time deciding between the artist role and the level design role, but I'm leaning more towards the artist. Working by myself , and planning on working out a pretty fantasy based level/world/whatever it is that I'll be making these arts for! Perhaps something to do with this fantasy world that all of the stuff I normally draw comes from, we'll see.
I suppose that's enough for now. Enjoy!
